Gall bladder cancer Detailed Information

Cancer of the gall bladder is a very uncommon condition.

Gall bladder cancer, also called carcinoma of the gall bladder. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped limb underneath the liver that collects and stores bile (a fluid made by the liver to digest fat). Gallbladder cancer starts in the intimate layer of tissue and spreads through the outer layers as it cultivates. Gall bladder cancer tends to spread to nearby organs and tissues such as the liver or small intestine. It also extends through the lymph system to lymph nodes in the region of the liver (porta hepatis). Gallbladder cancer is most frequently seen in older patients, with a median age at diagnosis of 62-66 years.

It arises more often in women’s. Gallbladder cancer is the fifth most common GI cancer in the United States. Gall bladder cancer is very rare affecting only 7,100 people in the United States per year. Gallbladder cancer infrequently produces premature signs and symptoms. When symptoms do seen, they often look like those of other, more common, gallbladder problems such as gallstones or infection. The bulk of these cancers are "adenocarcinomas", with subtypes such as papillary, nodular, and tubular, depending on the appearance of the tumor cells under the microscope.

Less common subtypes comprise: squamous cell, signet ring cell, and adenosquamous (adenoacanthoma). Gallbladder cancer symptoms consist of jaundice and fever. Most gall bladder cancers are only revealed when they have reached fairly a late stage. They can reason a diversity of symptoms, including sickness and high temperatures, and sudden pain (which may come and go) in the upper right-hand side of the abdomen. The abdomen is the cavity containing several organs including the stomachScience Articles, gall bladder and liver. Treatment may also depend on the age and general health of the patient and whether the cancer is causing symptoms.

Surgery is a common treatment for cancer of the gallbladder if it has not broadened to surrounding tissues. Laparoscopy is frequently used to eliminate the gallbladder as a treatment for gallstones or chronic irritation of the gallbladder. This operation is called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Chemotherapy employs drugs to destroy cancer cells. Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells and minimize tumors. Radiation for gallbladder cancer generally comes from a machine outside the body (external beam radiation therapy). Radiation may be used alone or in addition to surgery.

Canada Pharmacy Drug Fights Bladder Cancer Risks

People with type 2 diabetes taking Actos (pioglitazone) to control blood sugar may put themselves at risk for bladder cancer, and to buy Zofran Canada may be prescribed by their doctors once the treatment for bladder cancer ends to prevent nausea and vomiting.

"We believe physicians, patients and regulatory agencies should be aware of this association when assessing the overall risks and benefits of this therapy," said lead researcher Laurent Azoulay, from the Center for Clinical Epidemiology at the Lady Davis Institute at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.

"The association between the use of pioglitazone and bladder cancer is controversial, with several studies reporting conflicting results, from modest increased risks to no association," said Azoulay, who also is an assistant professor in the oncology department at McGill University in Montreal.

Dr. Spyros Mezitis, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said "we need to be more careful with the use of this medication."

The whole class of these drugs has come under fire, he said. "If there are more studies like this, we will not be using this medication," he added.

Mezitis said he starts new type 2 diabetes patients on other drugs such as metformin to control blood sugar, rather than Actos. Because it's a generic drug, metformin also is less expensive than Actos.

Mezitis also thinks more patients with type 2 diabetes will get insulin earlier instead of using drugs like Actos. "We have to tailor treatment to each patient, and there are other ways of controlling blood sugar," he said.

Another expert, Dr. Joel Zonszein, a professor of clinical medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an endocrinologist at the Clinical Diabetes Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, said he thinks the study is weak, and the risk of bladder cancer is small.

"There is an important role for these medications," he said. "I am probably one of the last doctors who is still supporting the use of these medications." Generic Zofran cheap will surely aid patients undergoing bladder cancer treatments and medications.

Zonszein said he starts patients on Actos in combination with other drugs such as metformin to aggressively lower blood sugar. Patients, however, need to know the risks, he said.

Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital, was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same resultsArticle Submission, only without the dioxin.

Lifestyle Choices May be a Predictor of Bladder Cancer

By Jon Stout

The thought itself is astounding: a way possibly exists to predict if a person could possibly contract bladder cancer in the future. In recent studies, debate is emerging in regards to one theory - that lifestyle choices and the impact of living life a certain way may be related to bladder cancer. A recent study by the Department of Preventive Medicine of Nagoya University School of Medicine indicates that there might, in fact, be a strong and credible link between lifestyle and bladder cancer.

The department studied 258 bladder cancer patients in order to determine if lifestyle choices played a role in allowing medical professionals to prognosticate the possibility that patients might be susceptible to bladder cancer. This was a follow-up study of patients who had suffered from bladder cancer in metropolitan Nagoya, Japan and were recruited for study. Their personal survival information was derived from a database that was maintained by the Nagoya Bladder Cancer Research Group.

After reviewing the tests and their results, researchers were able to pinpoint several key factors that impact the occurrence and re-occurrence of this type of cancer. Univariate analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between 5 year survivorship and the level of education a person possessed, their marital status, drinking habits, and the degree of green tea consumption in males. Additional factors were the age at which the cancer was diagnosed, the histological type and grade of the any tumors, the degree of metastasis, and the state of metastasis in both sexes.

The results were adjusted for age, stage, histology (histological type and grade), and distant metastasis by means of a proportional hazards model. The consumption of alcoholic beverages was also significantly associated with the prognoses of bladder cancer in males. The ratio of adjusted hazard was 0.46 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.26 - 0.79 among males that consumed alcoholic beverages.

Detailed analysis revealed that former drinkers and every level of current drinkers exhibited hazard ratios smaller than unity, although no correlation between dosage amounts was detectable. Other factors, such as smoking habits, uses of artificial sweeteners and hair dye, and consumption of coffee, black tea, matcha (powdered green tea), and cola were detected, leading one to believe that it is reasonable to conclude that drinking any type of beverage, not just alcohol, plays a significant role in the development or re-occurrence of bladder cancer.

The significance of this is vague in terms of prognosis, although that ratio seems to indicate that at least among those who participated in the study and were bladder cancer survivors, drinking alcohol is not a very good idea. Additionally, the study showed that the higher risk factor in regards to bladder cancer and males can be correlated directly to drinking in terms of re-occurrence propensity.

If you are male and have had bladder cancer, along with dietary changes and other lifestyle choices, avoiding alcoholic beverages might increase the possibility of avoiding the sickness in the future.

This, however, is not, and should not be considered conclusive, but merely the very compelling result of one specific study. Also, the indication that other factors, such as smoking, did not seem to increase the risk of re-occurrence, should not be construed as rock solid justification for those behaviors.

For instance, the fact that smoking does not apparently increase the risk bladder cancer does not in any way obviate the fact that smoking has been risked to other diseases or maladies such as heart disease, lung cancer, strokes, or degradation of blood circulation. All of these conditions are just as life-threatening as bladder cancer.

One significant factor seems to be that dosage amounts of alcohol do not seem to correlate with the propensity of re-occurrence. In fact, this study seemed to show that among moderate to heavy drinkers, the re-occurrence rate was unaffected. If one were to take this at face value, one could conclude that any drinking at all increases the chances of bladder cancer coming back.

Cystectomy Bladder Surgery

By Sven Ullmann

The surgical procedure to remove the bladder is known as a cystectomy and is usually performed as a result of cancer of the bladder. You can also have radiation and chemotherapy treatment which is used to treat bladder cancer. If the cancer is in the muscle of the bladder then surgery is performed to remove it.

Cystectomy is considered a very aggressive treatment option and may not be the best option for everyone. Those who have superficial tumors may respond better to a more conservative treatment. A cystectomy is considered a major surgical procedure and the patient is put under general anesthesia. There is a small incision made on the lower abdomen.

The ureters are found, tied, and cut. The ureters connect the bladder to the kidneys, so cutting them frees the bladder for the removal process. The bladder as well as other associated organs are then removed. In male patients the prostate is removed along with the bladder. In women patients the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and part of the vagina are also removed with the bladder removal process.

The bladder of a healthy person collects urine from the kidneys for excretion at a later time. When the bladder has been removed the doctors must come up with a new method to remove urine from the body. In many cases a small portion of the small intestine is removed, cleaned, and tied at one end to become the form of a tube. After this the other end is then used to form a stoma, which is an opening through the abdominal wall to outside the body. The patient is required to wear a bag to collect the urine.

Before the procedure is performed a member of the medical staff will discuss the entire procedure and can tell the patient where the stoma will be on their body and what it will look like. The patient will also get all the information they need on how to care for a stoma and bag. Counseling may be discussed and there may be a period of fasting required as well as an enema.

After going through a successful operation the patient will be given fluid based nutritional drinks until the intestines begin to function normally. You are also given antibiotics to prevent infection of the incision area. When a person's organs are removed it means that there will be major lifestyle changes after the procedure.

After this procedure women are infertile as a result of the ovaries and uterus being removed, but it is more common for women to have a cystectomy are postmenopausal and are far past their child baring days. Men are impotent because the nerves that control penis erection are cut during the removal process of the bladder.

The patient must be fitted with an external bad that connects to the stoma and is used to collect urine. These bags are usually worn around the waist and are easily hidden under clothes. It may take a while to get used to wearing a bag but since there isn't a bladder urine is excreted when it is produced, which is continuously.

Processed Meat to Blame for Cancer of the Bladder

By Kirsten Whittaker

The very same chemicals that make processed meats like cold cuts appealingly pink and flavorful, while keeping botulism at bay may also raise your risk of cancer of the bladder according to a new report. This year just over 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with this disease, and more than 2% of the population will develop it over their lifetime.

Pointing a tentative finger at nitrites and nitrates, used as preservatives and to add color and flavor to red meat cold cuts, the researchers agree that more work needs to be done to confirm their findings.

In general, work linking meat and bladder cancer has offered inconsistent results, these latest findings bring modest support for the idea of an increased risk of bladder cancer based on dietary nitrite and nitrate intake.

When it comes to bladder cancer, risk factors that are known to be trouble include smoking and exposure to arsenic.

Still there are other likely exposures, and that's why the team investigated whether compounds found in meat that form during cooking - heterocyclic amines (HCAs) or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) - or during the preservation of some types of meats - nitrates and nitrites - were linked to cancer of the bladder. Nitrate and nitrite are precursors to N-nitroso compounds (NOCs) thought to induce tumors in organs.

It's important to understand that the red meat that's not in the form of a cold cut, things like beef, bacon, hamburger, sausage and steak... were not connected to bladder cancer. Instead it was red meat cold cuts that brought the increased risk.

To complete the work data was used from a study that started in 1995. The research followed 300,933 older men and women (age 50-71) in eight U.S. states; with participants filling out questionnaires on the meat they ate as well as how it was cooked. The researchers matched this data to lab measured meat components and the total dietary nitrate and nitrite intake were calculated based on the values given.

During the eight-year study 854 (less than 0.3%) were diagnosed with bladder cancer. The team saw that the top fifth of participants whose diets were high in nitrites from all sources (not just meat) and those who got a lot of nitrites in their diet from processed meats had about a 30% greater risk of being diagnosed with bladder cancer than those whose consumption of these foods was ranked lowest.

People who ate the most red meat were younger, less educated, less physically active and ate fewer fruits, veggies and vitamins C and E than those who ate the least red meat. The biggest meat eaters among us, according to Cross, are more likely to be non-Hispanic, white, a smoker with a higher BMI.

If you're worried about your risk of bladder cancer, there are things to think about...

- Stop smoking - smoking increases your risk of bladder cancer five-fold.

- Eat a healthy diet, low in fried meats and fat.

- Understand the risks and avoid being exposed to substances at work - dye workers, rubber workers, aluminum workers, leather workers, truck drivers and pesticide applicators are especially at risk.

- Lingering bladder infection, one that's chronic, can lead to the development of squamous cell bladder cancers only.

- Parasite infections in third world nations of the organism schistosomiasis have been linked to the development of this type of cancer.

- If you have any symptoms, don't wait, talk with your doctor right away. You may have an abdominal CT scan, biopsy or some other test to see where you stand and get treatment underway.

The good news when it comes to cancer of the bladder is that most cases today are caught early, when treatment is most effective. How well you do depends on the stage of the cancer and how you respond to therapy, but often the outlook is good, and getting better all the time. Follow up and screening to be sure you stay cancer free are also important.
